Northeast Road Trip

Northeast Road Trip

I recently made the longest road trip of my life to the northeastern corner of the country. I played tournaments in 13 states in just over 3 weeks, driving over 4200 miles.. Fortunately I have a car that gets over 40 miles to a gallon. All along the way I have been handing out cards with this blog address, but am just now getting around to posting anything. I apologize to all for the procrastination..

Before the trip, I had already played in 11 states.  Now I have now played in all states East of the Mississippi except for Michigan. Below is the list of the states that I have already played this trip, along with the town, venue, and approximate date of the first time there.

No. State Town Venue      Date
12  Pennsylvania Temple Temple Fire Company 04/20/22
13  Rhode Island Tiverton ACL Open, Longplex Sports Center 04/22/22
14  Maine Sanford Mill Towne Tavern 04/25/22
15  New Hampshire Londonderry Game Changer Sports Bar 04/26/22
16  Vermont Rutland American Legion 04/27/22
17  New York Glen Falls Cool Insuring Arena 04/28/22
18  Massachusetts Amesbury Layfayette Club 04/29/22
19  Connecticut Berlin Truck Bar 05/02/22
20  New Jersey Millville Elk’s Club 05/03/22
21  Delaware Newport Minquas Fire Company 05/04/22
22  Maryland Aberdeen American Legion 05/05/22
23  West Virginia Martinsburg Fairgrounds 05/07/22
24  Virginia Christiansburg Moose Club 05/10/22

This map shows all the states I have played with different colors for the ones before and after this trip.

Back in January, I met Carrie from Woohoo Cornhole in Massachusetts, and told her about my quest to play a cornhole tournament in every state. She suggested that I come to play in the ACL Open in Rhode Island in April. With the New England states so close together, I could play in a different state each night. I decided to take her up on the idea, and left home April 19.

Being the off season gave the advantage of the roads and sites and beaches being less crowded. But I am sure the beauty of the northern states  is even greater once the trees and fields get their full color.

Being of modest means, I drove to try to keep my expenses down. That also gave the advantage of seeing more of the scenery along the way. I got a greater perspective of just how majestic this country is. Also, all the windshield time gave me time to reflect on my life so far with its ups and downs

I stayed in houses I found through Airbnb if more than a night, and inexpensive  hotels otherwise. Most of my dinners were at the venues I was playing at so relatively inexpensive.

Finding tournaments I used Scoreholio a lot. In case you are not familiar with it, Scoreholio is an app that runs on a phone, tablet, or PC for running tournaments. It has a search feature that lets you look for upcoming tournaments within a search radius from a location. Many tournaments use tablets for keeping score, so you can follow them live remotely by using the app.

But some tournaments are not run on Scoreholiio, and even some that are are not entered in advance. Facebook searches for cornhole groups is another way to find tournaments, as well as the ACL and  ACO websites. It would be nice if there was a central website to find tournaments, but so far none exists so far. Perhaps a future project.

I took over 1000 photos this trip – some of the tournaments and some of the sites along the way. I plan to write a separate post for each state played. Hopefully I will get busy and do so before I forget too much.

  1. This is so cool! Inspiring me to do some stuff I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Like write a book, start running again, and travel. Looking forward to more of your story!!
